Goa State Museum

Goa State Museum is located in Panjim, which is the capital city of Goa. This new museum complex, located in the EDC Complex in Patto, was inaugurated by the President of India when it first opened on June 18th, 1996. Prior to this date, artifacts was set up in the Department of Archives in Goa by the Archeology & Museum unit. Thereafter, a small museum was opened to the public on September 29th, 1977 in a rented building at St. Inez, also in Panjim.

It is famous for its collection of almost 8,000 items that attract tourists from far and wide. The Goa state Museum in Goa is especially famous for its collection of Hindu and Jain scriptures. This museum is very famous for its huge collection related to art, religion and history, stone sculptures, wooden objects, carvings, bronzes, paintings, manuscripts, rare coins, numismatic collection, and anthropological objects. It is well known among other museums for its collection of Hindu and Jain artifacts and scriptures along with different priceless antiques..

The State Museum of Goa houses an eclectic collection of over 8,000 items including stone sculptures, etc., Visitors also get to see countless antique wooden objects, famous Indian paintings, various manuscripts and anthropological objects. This gallery exhibits some exceptional sculptures, ancient seals and terracotta works.

The Goa State museum organizes several cultural competitions and programs through out the year.  Intricately carved sculptures made of stone and bronze are the main attractions of this gallery. The Numismatic Gallery is a must visit for the history loving people and people interested in numismatology.The museum has been divided into twelve galleries for facilitating the classification and display of the artifacts. While the Sculpture Gallery features stone sculptures and copper inscriptions, the Contemporary Art Gallery displays paintings and sculptures of eminent Goan and Indian artists. The innumerable clay objects and Bronzes also never fail to delight visitors in quest of art in this museum. Another historically significant object is the carved table, which had been used during Goa’s inquisition.Thus, Goa is full of discos, picnic beaches, churches and temples and also unique and very popular museums. However, there are a few objects, which principally captivate the attention of one and all. The delight of being in highly exotic museums is specially appreciated by tourists, keen on understanding Goan history and the priceless pieces of art, in this popular Indian tourist destination. Open time and close time 09:30 to 13:00 hrs and 14:00 to17:30 hrs. The pair of antique lottery machines is one such object, which draws visitors in large numbers.
