The Shri Gopal Ganapati Temple
This temple of Ganesha is situated in Fermagude, Ponda and attracts lot of pilgrims.
The Shri Ganesh Temple also known as the Shri Gopal Ganapati temple is situated amidst beautiful natural surroundings at Farmagudi in Ponda at about 26 kms from Panjim.
It is known that in October, 1683 the fort of Ponda was attacked by the Portuguese Viceroy who due to the sudden appearance of the Maratha King Sambhaji with a large army, had to beat a hasty retreat. This event is commemorated in Farmagudi.
While grazing cattle near the hill the Gopal Ganapati stone image was discovered by herdsmen who later installed it in a small shrine with a thatched roof. In April 24, 1966 the first Chief Minister of Goa , late Shri Dayanand Bandodkar who built the temple had the idol made of metal alloy and consecrated.
The Shri Ganesh temple synthesizes both ancirnt and modern architecture and is a fine example of Indian temple architecture.
This temple has a smaller deepa sthambha , and a beautiful dance motif of Radha – Krishna in marble as one enters the temple building. The idol here is very huge and is adorned with silver kavacham.This temple is also maintained very well like all other temples in Goa.
How to reach : The nearest railway stattion is Madgaon. Distance from railway station to Fermagude is about 20 Kms.
This temple is near to Mangesh, Gomantak Balaji and Devaki Krishna temples.
